If you've listened to Christian radio within the last decade, it's highly likely you've heard a Rachael Lampa song. Her three albums spawned a number of hit singles, including several #1 hits. However, after her third album in 2004, she took a long break from music. During that time, Lampa appeared in a Christian film, became a background singer for American Idol's Jordin Sparks, and got married. And last year, she finally decided to start making music again---this time, independently.
Fans of Rachael's previous work should have nothing to worry about with this EP, as far as the music goes. She takes a pretty safe R&B/pop direction, following in the direction of her other albums. The lyrical content, however, centers more on love than faith, which is probably where most fans will be disappointed. The closing track, "Human," is the only song that mentions God, and even it is discreet.
The highlight of the EP is "Avalanche," which stars off as a pretty piano ballad, and then climaxes after the second chorus and becomes a powerful, soaring anthem, showcasing Lampa's top-notch vocals.
The bubbly "Close To The Sun" is another highlight, as is the slick "All The Way Down." "Loving You" and "Human" have more of an easy, mellow guitar-based sound, following in the footsteps of Rachael's self-titled album. "Mr. Somebody Else" is the wild card of this EP, with an electronic, poppy vibe. It instantly brings back memories of the Kaleidoscope era, which also make it sound a tad dated.
After going independent, most artists change their sound at least a little. However, Rachael Lampa's first independent EP continues in the same direction of her previous albums, which could be a good and a bad thing. Human sticks to the formula, and is nothing we haven't heard from Rachael before. But it's great to have Rachael Lampa back on the music scene, and Human is something to whet fans' appetites until her next full-length album. We've missed you, Rachael!
